Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (VW) is recalling certain 2021-2023 ID.4 vehicles. Due to a software issue, affected vehicles may experience center displays and instrument panel displays that do not boot, or that sporadically reset. This can result in loss of speedometer information or loss of rearview camera image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 101, "Control and Displays" and 111, "Rear Visibility."

Risk: Displays that do not show critical information, such as vehicle speed or the rearview camera image, increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update the vehicle software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on December 20, 2024. Owners may contact VW customer service at 1-800-893-5298. VW's number for this recall is 919A.

A center brake light module burned up, contaminating the passenger compartment with toxic fumes and making the vehicle undriveable. The fumes caused burning throat, headache, and nausea with potential worse long-term health implications. Volkswagen replaced the faulty unit but has refused to mitigate the toxic fumes or replace the vehicle under warranty. A web search indicated this isn't an isolated problem with at least this vehicle model and year.

PRIMARY SAFETY DEFECT — SUDDEN STOP IN ACTIVE TRAFFIC: The vehicle suffers from severe, uncommanded electrical/drive-system shutdowns. While driving in live traffic, the ID.4 panics, flashes error alerts on the display, and abruptly stops within seconds. This sudden, violent stopping in active lanes creates an extreme safety hazard, leaving the EV dead in traffic with no warning and creating an immediate, severe risk of high-speed rear-end collisions, loss of control, and…

My 2022 VW ID.4 Pro S has experienced a total failure of the GPS and telematics system (J949 module), causing a dangerous 'GPS Drift' where the vehicle reports its location miles away from its actual position. This creates two severe safety hazards: Automated System Malfunction: The Travel Assist and Dynamic Road Sign systems are receiving conflicting data. The camera correctly identifies a speed limit (e.g., 40 mph), but the faulty GPS overrides it with incorrect map data…

I use this car for work daily, see patients in their homes. The driver door won’t locked, for 2 consecutive days and this is not the first time incident. Whenever this happens, I notify the dealer but they said VW does not have repair/solution to it yet. So, the car’s safety features (emergency braking, lane departure assist, adaptive cruise control and etc) are not functional. This makes it dangerous for us/drivers.
